We climbed to new heights with a graphics package, main title, and a 3D rendered mountain for Free Solo. The documentary won the 2019 Academy Award for "Best Documentary" and hit the top of the indie box office for 2018, becoming the best theater average ever for a documentary.We were stoked to be a part of such a monumental documentary and work with directors, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. Together, we collaborated to create the main title, lower thirds, location IDs and archival sequences--drawing inspiration from Alex’s journal entries and his life as a climber.
A fun and expressive typographic language was developed for a wide range of communication from chapter cards to character identifiers. Delicate hand drawn elements connect the information and add personality.
