Food, Inc. 2 is the 2023 sequel to the acclaimed 2008 documentary Food, Inc., directed by Robert Kenner and Melissa Robledo. The documentary examines the rise of ultra-processed foods, the exploitation of labor, and the environmental impact of industrial agriculture. The design system takes cues from the oversized, often garish aesthetics of processed food packaging, but reinterprets them into a clean, bold visual language - built to present complex statistics and ideas with clarity and impact.
Food items are presented in crisp, top-down studio shots with backgrounds removed, allowing each product to stand out and information to be easily read. Typography is oversized and clear, with ingredient lists styled to mimic real packaging, reinforcing the visual connection to consumer food labeling.
Inspired by processed food packaging, the title is oversized and grabs attention. Multiple versions were created combining imagery of all the foods featured in the film.
The intent of these initial designs was to help establish the graphic look and feel of the film. The oversized type inspired by processed food packaging resonated the most and became the basis for the film's design.
